On National Signing Day 2017, five Junipero Serra High School student-athletes committed to play in college. The announcements were made at a standing-room only crowd consisting of students, faculty, staff, parents and friends at a school-wide assembly in Serra’s gymnasium. The following Cavaliers made their college decisions:
- Kordell Ross (DL/OL): Minot State University (North Dakota)
- Tamrick Ross (DL/OL): Minot State University (North Dakota)
- Tysyn Parker (LB): San Jose State University (California)
- Jalani Eason (QB): Portland State University (Oregon)
- Deion Malone (WR): William Penn University (Iowa)
After opening comments by Josh Dabbs, Serra’s athletic director and defensive coordinator, longtime head football coach, Scott Altenberg, spoke about each student-athlete. Altenberg’s joy for these accomplishments was clearly evident. Video highlights of each player followed the coach’s remarks.
“I am continually proud of our football program, our coaches, our school, and our Serra family. When students come to Serra, they go to college--it’s that simple. It really takes a village, and I can’t tell you how proud I am of these seniors,” said Altenberg. “Each and every one of the players worked and worked to earn this moment.”
Signing Day events have become a staple on Serra’s campus, and next year’s class is expected to yield more of the same. Many underclassmen have received scholarship offers from colleges and universities across the country including USC, LSU, Tennessee, Oregon, and many others.
