Add MVP of the Collision all-star basketball game to the growing list of achievements for Serra High School’s Siera Thompson.
The Michigan-bound guard who led the Cavaliers to the first state championship in program history, had already earned All-CIF and all-state recognition before Saturday’s game at Redondo.
She scored 15 points, added six rebounds and four assists as the Southern Section snapped a three-game losing streak in the series with a 78-53 victory over the City Section.
Thompson and her Serra backcourt partner, Deandrea Toler, both had solid performances for the Southern Section, which began taking of the contest in the second quarter.
A 17-6 run in the second period opened up a 31-19 advantage for the CIF-SS. A 26-13 outburst in the third quickly turned the game into a runaway.
Toler added seven points and five assists and both forced the City into numerous turnovers that led to easy baskets at the other end.
Vista Murrieta’s Serafina Maulupe, headed to Virginia Tech, scored 14 points and St. Monica’s Briana Harris had 12. Keyla Morgan of Long Beach Poly added 11.
El Rancho’s Khadidja Diakite scored four points and grabbed four rebounds.
For the City, El Camino Real guard Cora Chan and Monroe center Ayisat Afalabi had 14 points each. Chan, who was honored as the girls Scholar-Athlete Award winner, hit four 3-pointers. Afalabi had seven rebounds.
John’ea Thompson of Fairfax had nine points and Carson’s Rachelle Owens added eight.
