3rd Quarter Sonnet Project

Periods 3 and 5:  due Monday March 23

Periods 2 , 4, and 6: due Friday March 20

For our 3rd Quarter Project, students are to write a Shakespearean sonnet on one of the following topics:

1.  Write a sonnet from the perspective of Hatsue Miyamoto.

2.  Write a sonnet from the perspective of Ishmael Chambers.

3.  Write a sonnet from the perspective of Ilse Lund (Casablanca).

4.  Write a sonnet from the perspective of Rick Blaine (Casablanca).

5.  Write a sonnet preserving the life of something that is important to you.  How will you make this person or thing stay alive for hundreds of years to come?  Why do you want this person/thing to be remembered?  Why is he/she/it so important?

Grading Rubric:

Shakespearean sonnet form (30 points):  Are there 14 lines?  Did the student use the correct rhyme scheme?  Are there the correct number of quatrains and couplets?  Sonnets DO NOT have to be written in iambic pentameter.

Content (40 points):  Does the student express masterful knowledge of the subject in which he/she is writing?  Does the student allude to specific times and places taking place in the novel/movie?  Does the student express the idea of preserving life in literature?  Is the content original or cliché?

Figurative Language (15 points):  Is there at least one simile and one metaphor in the sonnet?  Does the student use imagery to describe certain people or situations?  Does the writer try to directly connect the content to the audience?

Vocabulary (15 points):  Does the student use a 9th grade appropriate vocabulary?  Does the student express a mastery of the vocabulary that he/she chooses to use?  (Suggestion: use AT LEAST one word from our vocabulary book)

Creativity (15 points):  Does the student use an original sense of imagination?  Does the student do something unexpected that ties into the theme and form of the sonnet?  Does the student’s originality exceed 9th grade expectations?

Spelling and Neatness:  More than 3 spelling mistakes will result in a zero.  The sonnet does not have to be typed however it is HIGHLY suggested.  If a sonnet is illegible, it will be returned, and will result in a zero.

Checklist:

Are there exactly 14 lines in my sonnet?

Did I use the correct rhyme scheme for a Shakespearean sonnet?

Did I use the proper number of quatrains and couplets?

Did I make specific reference to feelings, times, places in the novel or movie?

Did I explain how I would preserve that which is important to me in literature?

Did I explain why my subject is so important to me that I want to preserve it?

Did I use one simile?

Did I use one metaphor?

Did I use any imagery?

Did I use at least one word from my vocabulary book?

Did I try to be original?

NB:  There are 115 possible points for this assignment.  The sonnet will be graded out of 100.  This Project is worth 20% of your overall average for the 3rd quarter.  Apply what that means:  Let’s say that before the project you have a 100% average, and for one reason or another you decide not to hand it in, then your overall grade for the 3rd quarter would be an 80%.  Say before the project you have an 80% average, and you receive a 115% on the sonnet, you overall average for the 3rd quarter would be an 87%.  This project has the ability to either greatly help you, or greatly hurt you if you do not do it.  This is not a difficult assignment, please hand it in on time.  Any sonnet that is one day late will not receive a grade higher than a C.  Any sonnet more than one day late will receive an F.
