Their Eyes Were Watching God

Final Project

Task:

To write the Eatonville newspaper the day after Janie comes back to town

You are to work in groups of 4 for this project.  You choose your groups

Guidelines:

Your newspaper must contain the following:

15 points          -Lead story with relevant photo/picture (350 words)-

10 points          -Editorials (at least 2)- 150 words each

5 points            -Obituaries (at least 1)- 150 words

5 points            -Weather- 150 words

5 points            -Sports- 150 words

5 points            -Nature- 150 words

5 points            -Travel- 150 words

5 points            -Business- 100 words

5 points            -Comic strip

5 points            -Classifieds (at least 5)- 25 words each

5 points            -Horoscope for the day- 50 words

5 points            -Photography/pictures (at least 4)

10 points          -Aesthetic value/ how good the project looks

-Each article must have a headline/title

                        -Presented on tri-fold poster-board

15 points          -Presentation- 10 minutes

-Must read two articles and summarize all others

-Each group member should talk about what they did

-Reflection on the project as a whole

100 points total- I will divide this by two for the grade I put in the grade book (50 pts)

You should be creative with this project.  When you write the articles for the newspaper, the author’s name can be yours (as a member of the town), made up, or a character from the book.  You choose the topics for the different articles.  You make up the name of the paper, the date, et cetera.  There is a lot of freedom in this project.

However, be aware that when I read your articles I will be checking for your understanding of the book.  With this in mind, your articles should tie in with the themes/what happened in the book.

First draft of Bright Lights, Big City paper due:

Bright Lights, Big City
Final paper

There are three main symbols used throughout Bright Lights, Big City: the missing person, the coma baby and Plato’s cave. In this paper, you must do the following for each of the three symbols:

1- Explain what each symbol represents for the main character or represents in the book.
2- Explain how it applies to the main character’s life.

You will describe one symbol per body paragraph. Each body paragraph should have at least two direct references (direct quotations from the book with citations. Use page 260 in Writers Inc if you need help) to Bright Lights, Big City. Each body paragraph must be at least seven sentences.

This should be completed in a 5-paragraph essay form.
Double spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman

Due:

Assignment

This is a sample paragraph for the Bright Lights, Big City paper:

One of the symbols in Bright Lights, Big City is the missing person.  At many points in the book, the main character is walking on the street, then notices a flyer for “Mary O’Brien McCann; NYU student” (13).  The fact that he notices these flyers all over the city symbolizes that he is lost as well.  He is lost because he is living a life that he knows makes him unhappy.  He describes himself as “the kind of guy who appreciates a quiet night at home with a good book” but never actually lets himself be that guy (36).  Instead, he parties all night with Tad and ends up unhappy and alone.  He also mentions the missing person at the end of the book when he is talking about the death of his mother (178).  Again, this symbolizes how he was lost, living his shallow life and avoiding his family.

Due:

Assignment

1- Rough draft of "Bright Lights, Big City" paper due Thursday/Friday

2-Bring in your "Writers Inc" book

3- Have grade sheet signed.
