The North Torrance High boys basketball team is known for playing a frenetic style of hoops that features a lot of shots and a lot points.

The Saxons managed to dictate the pace against Serra. The Cavaliers just happened to dictate the scoreboard.

Serra pushed the tempo and beat visiting North at its own game, 107-90, in a high-scoring nonleague affair on Friday night.

It took the Cavaliers (3-3) about a quarter to get used to the breakneck speed of the game. The Saxons got off to a hot start shooting, knocking down three 3-point shots and led 25-20 after the opening period. From that point on, it was all Serra.

“We knew what they were going come out doing, they run a very good offense,” Cavaliers coach Dwan Hurt said. “We changed our defense a bit. We got up in them, and played a half-court trapping defense.”

Serra allowed just 14 points in the second, and its offense kept its foot on the pedal, which helped the Cavaliers build a 47-39 halftime lead.

Forwards Ian Carter and Caleb Wilson exerted their will all game long. Wilson played a superb all-around game with 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Carter was also stellar with 25 points, six rebounds and several blocks.

“They played really well,” Hurt said. “Both Caleb and Ian, we count on them to come up big for us in the rebounding category ... and they pretty much led us.”

In the second half, Serra built its lead to as large as 21 points. North managed to get within 10 points after three periods, but any comeback attempt was halted when Ryan Burnett fouled out.

Burnett scored 11 points, and was a key contributor to the Saxons’ hot start.

North (3-3) may have struggled defensively, but it came up with its best offensive output of the young season. Guard Aaron Ogata chipped in with 18 points, while backcourt mate Jerry Ipp added 13. Isaiah Holmes scored 11 points and was persistent on the offensive glass.

“Offense played great, losing Ryan Burnett in the third quarter really hurt us,” Saxons coach Luke Duperron said. “We executed pretty well, but Serra’s a pretty great defensive team and I have to tip my hat off to them.”
