Welcome Back Cavalier family
We begin a new year of Junipero Serra athletics here in 2016-2017 and it should be a fantastic new year throughout all three seasons. The common thread throughout all of the sports programs is that I am certain that each of our teams will compete at the highest level to represent our school and Serra community well. The success of each program is the result of the hard work that the players put in on the field, court, track, or pool, the weight room, and in the classroom. The student-athletes here at Junipero Serra benefit greatly from the amazing coaching staff in each and every program. In all programs the student-athletes learn about team-work, discipline, dedication, preparation, and hard work. These life skills not only benefit our Serra student-athletes in their sport, but in school and prepare them better for life.
The fall will be full of touchdowns, aces, field goals, kills, and the wonderful three mile courses. Football begins its second season in the Pac-5 and hopes to continue after their back and forth playoff loss to the eventual CIF champions. Girls’ volleyball hopes to build upon their success last year and return to the CIF playoffs for a second consecutive season. Cross country returns as well after a solid season by both the girls and boys, even having a boy qualify for CIF finals for the first time in many years.
The winter is all about the round ball, both basketball and soccer! Girls’ basketball comes into the season after a CIF State Southern Section Championship and played an amazing double overtime game at UC-Berkeley in the state championship. Boys’ basketball enters their second season in Divisin I and looks to make a return to the CIF playoffs. Girls’ soccer also had a very successful season where they made it to the CIF playoffs for the first time in numerous years. Boys’ soccer under a new coach showed signs of growth and look towards improving this season too.
The spring is always a busy time of the year for Serra athletics. Baseball made huge strides and improved greatly over the course of the season. Softball returned to the playoffs and look to make it a second year in a row this year. Boys’ track was impressive and finished as CIF runner-ups. Girls’ track made a very fast run into State and ran so fast that they placed very well. Girls’ beach volleyball looks to continue from last season as well as the team continues to grow in numbers. Girls’ and boys’ swim also had impressive seasons. For the first time in Serra’s history we had swimmers qualify for CIF.
The success of the entire Serra athletic department would not be possible without the support of many people. The Booster Club, development staff, administration, parents, donors, and training staff put in countless hours and their dedication is greatly appreciated. All who are interested in becoming involved with our athletic programs are welcomed and should contact our Booster Club president, Mrs. Carolyn Madera. If you are interested in donating funds to help support the athletic department, which would help us make the experience even better for our student-athletes, please contact Mr. Joe Cormier in the development office.
I am so excited to watch each of our programs continue to grow, compete, represent Serra and develop Cavaliers this year. Please come out and support our Serra Cavaliers and become a part of something special.
