GIRLS BASKETBALL: Serra pressure too much for Bishop Montgomery

So much for that heavyweight girls basketball bout between Bishop Montgomery and Serra.

It turned out to be a first-round knockout.

Host Serra blitzed Bishop Montgomery with stifling pressure defense and easily ran away with a 63-34 Del Rey League win Thursday.

"We had an extra-hard week of practice because of our extreme respect for Bishop Montgomery," Serra coach McKinsey Hadley said. "We knew they are a young team, so we wanted to come out early and keep the pressure on them."

Serra (16-2, 3-0) raced to leads of 7-0 and 16-2. It held a 21-4 edge after one quarter, a 38-11 halftime lead and eventually opened up a 35-point lead.

Talk about a statement game, one that resonates for Tuesday's Del Rey League showdown at St. Bernard.

"This had to be one of our best wins," Serra guard Siera Thompson said. "If we come out like this every game and play like we're supposed to play, I don't see us losing any more games this season."

Caila Hailey had 18 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for Serra. Thompson had 17 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three assists. Deandrea Toler added 12 points, five assists and four steals.

Serra got a big lift from Tatiana Howard, who had six points and eight rebounds. Serra also received stellar defensive play from

"We came out strong because of our senior leadership," Hadley said.

Bishop Montgomery coach Alexa Johnson said it was the most humbling game in her three-year tenure.

"Clearly my team was not ready to play, and that's unacceptable," Johnson said. "With young players, you have to teach them to prepare for games like this, and that's my job.

"A team like Serra will take advantage, and they did."

Bishop Montgomery (17-5, 1-2) missed its first five shots and had five turnovers before it finally got its first basket - by Sophia Song with 3:53 left in the first quarter.

The Serra defense clearly bothered Bishop Montgomery.

"We work on our traps and playing in-your-face defense," Hailey said. "Our coach says we are a blue-collar team, and we take that to our minds and use it to our advantage."

Song finished with 13 points, Dani Lee had eight points and Christine Delapina had seven points.
