2016-17 School Profile
Junipero Serra High School of Gardena, founded in 1950 by James Francis Cardinal McIntyre and the Marianist Order, is a coeducational, four-year, Catholic college preparatory school in the Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese that is enjoying its sixty third year of operation. Typically, 99% of the graduates go directly to higher education. The Class of 2016 had 100% college acceptance.
Serra currently has 40 full-time and 2 part-time teaching and administrative staff members who all hold professional degrees. The entire staff includes one faculty member with a doctoral degree and fifteen with master’s degrees.
Accreditation and Memberships:
Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Western Catholic Educational Association, the College Board, California Scholarship Federation, National Catholic Educational Association.
School Community
Junipero Serra is located in Gardena, California. Admission is by placement examination, evaluation, and elementary school grades. Each year approximately 30 elementary and middle schools, public and private, are represented in the applicant pool.
Serra’s tuition is competitive with most Catholic and private high schools in Los Angeles ($8,150, 2016-17). Considerable foundation support toward financial assistance enables Serra to educate students who might otherwise not be able to experience Catholic education because of their family’s economic and social backgrounds. Serra represents the diversity that is evident in its surrounding community.

The basic program required for all students includes eight semesters each of English and religion; six semesters each of mathematics, social studies, and foreign language; four semesters of laboratory science; two semesters of fine arts; and one semester of physical education and health. Eighty hours of community service are required over the four years.

2011-2015 Academic Years
Grade Scale Unweighted GPA Weighted GPA
Mark Percentage Mark Points Mark Points

B 89-80 B 3 B 4
C 79-70 C 2 C 3
F 69-0 F 0 F 0

Grade Point Averages

Our graduates have multiple GPA’s. Our Total G.P.A reflects a composite of all courses taken in the high school; the Cal Grant GPA is utilized for CAL GRANTS federal & state financial aid eligibility; the Academic G.P.A. reflects the courses that meet the UC/CSU A-G requirements. Private universities each view the Total G.P.A. and accept courses based on the individual university’s requirements.

All honors, advanced placement and El Camino College courses are weighted so that they are given a higher credit than the regular or non-honors course. The weighted G.P.A. is used to determine class ranking and the honor roll only. The incentive for choosing the more challenging course of studies is thus rewarded. The weighted grade is posted on the transcript as colleges accept both the unweighted or weighted G.P.A. Some colleges do weight particular subjects and will calculate their own G.P.A. for that student.

The school code is 051025
