About the Junipero Serra Cross Country Program

The foundation of our program is based on a fundamental running principle called the PR – achieving one’s personal best.  Under this principle, I have created a program that encourages scholar-athletes to achieve excellence academically, athletically, and in their personal lives.  Our athletes understand that the strength of a cross country team is dependent on the individual performances of its members.  In cross country, individual performance is measured by time.  As our runners cross the finish line, their times are recorded.  These times represent our individual and team work ethic, discipline, character, skill set, and a desire to PR.

About Our Runners

Most of our members are novices to the sport of cross country.  Of those who are new, many of them have experience and great success in track & field.  The balance between veteran athletes and novices presents an educational experience for both demographics on how to run, how to work as a team, and how to train and build as scholar-athletes under the concept of the PR. Those members originating in track, carry Serra’s long history of producing:

State Champions

  • Girls Place 3rd State last year (2017) / Girls in (2011) / Boys (2000 & 2012)
  • Four 4-Time Runner – up Girls (2009) / Boys (98’ / 2010 / 2012)
  • 24 CIF Div. #4 Championships in track & field: 5 Girls / 19 Boys

From 2014 – 2017, I assisted in coaching the high school (9th thru 12th grade) scholar - athletes
(boys & girls) in track & field for 400m / 800m / 1600m / 3200m runners & hurdles [100mH (G) /
110mHH / 300mIH (G & B)].  At Serra HS, last season (17’), the girls took 3rd @ State (D4). In the season (15’), boys track was D4 CIF Championships runner-up and girls track finished third.  The cross country program is relatively new.  We plan to develop the skill sets of both our veterans and novices and establish a new legacy for our sport.
