Sans Writer's Block

--
Junipero Serra High School is used to having the press put pen to paper about what is going on around campus. This time around, it is a Serra faculty member and coach that will be doing the writing. The multi-talented Chris Calvin ‘06 has inked a deal to author a book about the unique world of college football and his experience as a graduate assistant coach.

Calvin attended Serra from 2002 to 2006 where he was a standout all-league defensive back for the Cavaliers. Calvin would later move on to compete at Fresno State University.

Following his collegiate career, Calvin’s passion for the game of football remained. This is when Calvin took advantage of an opportunity provided by highly-respected head football coach, Pat Hill, to become a graduate assistant for the Bulldogs.

Calvin very much took advantage of this opportunity, and as a result, has a lot to share. In just two years, Calvin coached two National Football League draft picks in Davante Adams (Green Bay Packers) and Derek Carr (Oakland Raiders) plus five all-conference standouts. Adams was also named a 2012 Biletnikoff Award finalist. While at Fresno State, Calvin also contributed to back-to-back Mountain West Conference championships in 2013 and 2014.

The core of the currently untitled book will cover these invaluable experiences.

Speaking of being multi-talented, Calvin currently serves the Serra community in a multitude of ways including being a math instructor, science instructor and assistant athletic director. Outside of the classroom, Calvin coaches Cavalier wide receivers and special teams, and in the off-season, coordinates Serra’s strength and conditioning program.

When longtime head football coach Scott Altenberg was asked about what Calvin means to Serra, he responded, “What can I say about Coach Calvin? He has that ‘it’ factor. He’s smart, knows football and has a unique ability to connect with students, players and coaches. He has a ton of experience, a bright future and I’m looking forward to reading Calvin’s insights--it will be a great read.”

Calvin’s book is expected to be released in December 2016.

Calvin holds a Bachelors of Science degree in kinesiology from Fresno State and is working towards a masters in education.
